Choconut Township is a township in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 797 at the 2000 census.

It is named for the native tribe of Choconut, or Ochugnut people, who settled the area prior to European/American settlers.[1]

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 20.3 square miles (53 km2), of which, 20.1 square miles (52 km2) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2) of it (0.93%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 797 people, 316 households, and 236 families residing in the township. The population density was 39.6 people per square mile (15.3/km²). There were 377 housing units at an average density of 18.7/sq mi (7.2/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 99.00% White, 0.38% Native American, 0.13% Asian, and 0.50% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.00% of the population.

There were 316 households out of which 31.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.4% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.3% were non-families. 19.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.91.

In the township the population was spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 31.6% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 100.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.0 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $43,021. Males had a median income of $37,321 versus $19,219 for females. The per capita income for the township was $16,726. About 11.7% of families and 15.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.3% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
